While motherhood is a full time job, you may want to not give up on your career. However, motherhood changes your career possibilities and often ambitions, so finding a job is a different process post-baby than it was pre-baby. In doing so, there are some pointers you’d do well to keep in mind.
When looking for jobs, ensure that whatever you end up doing, your child is still getting enough attention. If you’re leaving him with a baby sitter or family member, ensure that they give your baby all the attention he/she requires as this is important for optimal development. Care includes emotional support, mental stimulation, and physical activity.
If you’re planning on leaving your baby at a daycare centre, make sure to check in on him/her and the day care centre from time to time. It’s important that your baby adjusts and is comfortable in the place that he/she is going to be spending a considerable portion of their day. If your baby doesn’t take a shine to the place and has to stay in discomfort for the entire duration of their stay, it could lead to mental and emotional trauma and discomfort which would, in turn, affect the healthy development of your baby. It’s also important to see how well he/she is getting along with the other kids so that you can be sure that socialization is happening in the right way.
As a mum, it’s most advisable for you to find a job which has flexible work hours. A job where you can maybe select the hours of work each week or make last minute changes. Also something which doesn’t keep you working for too long or a major portion of the day. Maybe your child is sick or has to doctor’s appointment or just having a bad day. Either way, leaving your baby at home will, in all likelihood, kill you on the inside so much so, that you won’t leave. In this case, being stuck in jobs with rigid timings becomes a hindrance to your ability to function and balance out your motherhood and your career.
A wonderful option that wouldn’t hurt you is to try is working from home! There are a lot of possible jobs you can do out of the comfort of your own home, such as running a daycare, tutoring, babysitting, catering, gardening related jobs, and a bunch more. If you tend to be paranoid about your baby and his/her well being, working from home can ease your mind. This way, you can also ensure that you’re doing all you can for your baby.
Apart from having flexible hours, the kind of timings you have also makes a big difference. Children need their mothers quite a bit. You can look for jobs with timings that suit you and your baby to make sure that you get the maximum possible amount of time with your little one. Look for jobs such as school teachers or part time jobs with morning shifts. This way, if your baby is going to school, you will have similar timings and you can be home around the same time as your baby.
Another brilliant option you can try out is freelance work. With freelance, highest chances are that they won’t keep you busy all the time, and it can be as flexible as you want it to be, with regard to timings and workload.
Keep these pointers and factors in mind while searching for a job. It also depends on your partner’s availability. If your partner has few hours of work or more flexible timings, you can look at jobs which might require more of you because you know that your partner will be home to look after the baby.
Happy job hunting!
