A long road trip with your toddler can be fun if planned properly. Toddlers can get restless, whine continuously and even refuse to nap and that can be challenging. Travelling with a toddler also means messy hands and clothes and sometimes unexpected care sickness. Make sure you carry along some road trip essentials for your toddler like baby wipes, mosquito repellent patches, diapers, diaper rash cream and a change of clothes.
Once you are all set and packed, it’s time to make travelling with your toddler a fun experience for your little one and yourself. Here are seven fun road trip activities that you can try if you have a toddler to make the trip a memorable one.
Print out a free scavenger hunt online, and get your child to do activities like colouring or circling items they see as you’re driving along. This game will give you and your child a good hour of quiet time as he/she hunts for items on the list.
Music might work like magic for some toddlers who are getting bored of just sitting in the car. If your toddler enjoys listening to songs, create a playlist of their favourite tracks for the road trip. Once on the trip, play them along and enjoy. Music and songs always help to soothe and calm toddlers.
Vehicle spotting can be the perfect travel activity if your toddler enjoys looking out of the window. Just carry a printout of the pictures containing different road vehicles and tick them off as your child finds them. Teach them how to recognise and spot the cars they see.
Pick up a hard disk or pen drive filled with free books that everyone can listen to as a family. There are many apps as well these days which have fun podcasts of different genres that you can play by downloading them in advance. Stories always help in keeping toddlers engaged and it also sparks their imagination.
Print out a few educational worksheets for your child to work on throughout the trip. Add in a pouch for pencils, pens, and crayons. You can also put the worksheets in plastic protectors and let the kids use a dry-erase marker which they can use over and over again.
Reading a book or information about the place you are visiting is another fun road trip activity for kids that is unbeatably exciting. You can either pick up a book about the place or just take some printouts to read to your toddler. On the return journey, you can use the same to talk about the places they visited and what they liked or disliked about the same.
In this road trip activity, your child will count everything he/she sees during the trip. It can include trees, animals, bikes, cars and so on. This simple game does not require any prior planning. Yet counting objects is one of those kid road trip activities that involve a lot of fun and learning.
Try these different road trip activities for kids on your next trip and make the most of the experience.
