There’s no denying that the perception of job quality as a woman changes after she becomes a mum. Will she make it on time to the office? Will she be able to meet tight deadlines? Will she be able to go on a work tour? The answer to all these questions? A big yes! While working mums may have to make some adjustments, it doesn’t mean that they cannot fulfill their job.
Recently, influencer and new mum Masoom Minawala Mehta penned a powerful, message for working mums and talked about the trials a woman has to go through when she returns to work after motherhood. Her heartfelt letter touched the hearts of many mums who found it 100% relatable and even opened up about their stories in the comments.
In her note, the new mum shares how her priorities have changed after welcoming her little one, and the difficult decisions that she has to take on a daily basis. Despite these challenges, Massom shares that she is happy that her son is seeing her do it all with confidence.
Massom reveals, “If I showed up to work with passion before him, now I am compelled to show up with triple the grit, determination, and strength. After all, my son is watching. He is watching as I rush to a meeting after a feed. He is watching as I time my shoots around his schedule.”
Talking about how she is struggling with mom guilt, and leaning in for support, the new mum revealed, “He is watching as I deal with my guilt. He is watching as I learn to trust others with my heartbeat. He is watching as I learn to be a young mother in the spotlight. He is watching as I struggle with navigating this new role.”
Masoom ended the note with, “And he is watching as I fail at it. But most importantly, he is watching me turn up despite it.”
Masoom’s letter speaks the story of every working mum and the trials and tribulations that they experience while navigating this journey. But it also reminds us that mums are undoubtedly the CEO of life, and despite the circumstance, they are great at multitasking, time management, as well as stress management. They know how to juggle work, home, and family like a pro, without dropping any balls.
However, working mums too need some tips and tricks, and that’s why, in the next section, we have listed some essential hacks that can help you stay on top of your game while looking after your newborn, acing at your work, and also maintaining your health and well-being.
Working mums face a unique challenge when it comes to balancing their responsibilities. On one hand, they want to excel in their careers and provide for their families, and on the other, they feel a constant pull to be with their children and be around them all the time. This can lead to a sense of guilt, more commonly termed mum guilt, that can be hard to shake.
While letting go of this feeling can be difficult, it’s the first step toward maintaining a proper work-life balance as a mum. Remember, working or providing for your family doesn’t make you a bad mum, you are just working toward a healthy and secure environment and future for your kids.
A working mum’s life can be extremely hectic and stressful. Hence, having a strong support system is crucial to maintaining your sanity. Don’t hesitate to seek help when needed, and surround yourself with supportive people who understand your situation and can give you valuable advice when needed.
It’s important for you to set realistic expectations, as trying to do everything perfectly is not only impossible, but it can also be detrimental to your physical and mental health. Trying to do too much can lead to burnout as well. Instead, focus on setting realistic expectations, including setting boundaries at work and home.
With everything that you have to do as a working mum, it’s easy to forget about your health and personal needs. However, dedicate a certain part of your day to yourself and follow this mantra:
It’s natural to feel that you are constantly under the spotlight and being judged as a working mum. You are trying to look after your baby, and balance your career, and it can be tough to determine how to focus your energy on both parts equally.
However, remember that you are not alone. Sometimes it may feel like you are barely keeping your head above the water, but instead of thinking that you are failing, face these situations head-on. Mistakes are a part of your life, and you will make them, but the good thing is, you get to learn valuable lessons from them. So hold your head high mama, you are already a superhero.
As Masoom puts it: being a working mum is not easy. You have to be efficient, organised, and manage several responsibilities at the same time. But instead of blaming yourself, or drawing yourself in mom guilt, embrace this journey, because no matter how tough it gets, you still strive to give your best. And that’s enough, you are already doing amazing, and if you need a little more help, follow the tips that we have mentioned to stay on top of your game.
