Any new parent will agree to how they have to learn to cope with less sleep because it can be difficult to get a good night’s sleep due to nightly feedings, diaper changes, and hallway strolls with a fussy infant. It’s also a good idea to keep things you may need for the baby at night ready at arm’s length. Things like diapers, natural diaper rash cream, and baby wipes are some of the things you may need during the nightly diaper changes.
Even though taking good care of oneself can be difficult when you have a baby, getting enough rest needs to be a top priority. If you are deprived of sleep it can not only cause serious health issues but may also make taking care of your little one difficult as it impacts how you think and cope.
Here are a few tips to help new parents cope with less sleep.
Lack of sleep can make you irritable, it also hampers your immunity and that can weaken your body’s defences. Therefore getting adequate sleep is very important for new parents.
If you have a newborn at home, practising good sleep hygiene will help you get more rest.
Newborns sleep between 16 and 18 hours per day, with regular naps lasting between two and four hours. If the only sleep that new parents are getting is overnight, they are sleep-deprived. Because of other children in the house or our internal biological clocks, napping in the day while the baby sleeps can occasionally be difficult.
It’s worthwhile to try and get some rest when your baby is sleeping. A 15-20-minute nap will refresh you and you’ll be better able to take care of your infant’s needs.
A more comfortable night can be had by placing the baby’s crib or bassinet close to your bed. This makes it simpler to attend to the infant before returning to bed. It is warned against co-sleeping in the same bed as your infant, due to the possibility of suffocating the child.
Lastly, it would only be fair to say, it can be quite challenging to control extreme fatigue. It may be beneficial to ask for support from others if you are sleep deprived. Asking for help can occasionally feel awkward, but we aren’t designed to accomplish everything on our own. It can help if a close friend, relative, or even a neighbour is willing to watch the child for a few hours while you get some rest.
