Curiosity is a common trait among kids. The way their eyes sparkle when you tell or show them something exciting is sure a treat to watch. And while their constant urge to know the answers to a million questions may irk you sometimes, curiosity in kids should be encouraged as it works wonders for them, both in their academics and in their developmental progress.
Curiosity in kids is also an indicator that they have started to think critically, and that their cognitive development has started to take its course. Read on as we tell you more about the benefits of curiosity in kids and how to encourage this trait in them.
Curiosity offers several benefits for young minds.
Yep, you read that right. While most parents hope that their kids follow in their footsteps one day, it can be beneficial to do the reverse at times. Allow your child to take the lead, and try to look at things from their perspective. Engage with them as they set out into the world to explore. This will help your child feel supported too.
It may bother you if your child finds it difficult to come up with a solution to a problem. However, it is not always ideal for you to rush in to help your child solve the problem. While it is essential to supervise your little one, do not tell, nudge, or guide your child directly on how things are done. Allow them to play independently to build curiosity and instill a sense of self-reliance.
Encourage your child to be more observant by posing questions and pointing out things. You can even try playing a game. For instance, point at a red flower, and ask your child to find things of the same colour. This will make them more observant about their surroundings, and help them notice things that they previously didn’t pay attention to.
Instead of criticising your child for getting something wrong, make room for mistakes. Laud them for their efforts and encourage them to learn from them. By negating their fear of being yelled at for a mistake, you directly encourage your child to become more curious.
Your little one may play more joyfully with a piece of paper than with a regular toy. Similarly, they may be more interested in lego sets and puzzles, as opposed to normal cars and stuffed toys. If this is the case, then engage them in open-ended activities, and give them space to experiment and use their imagination to come up with different things on their own.
Your child is always exploring, observing, and absorbing information. To boost their curiosity, you can try to build a stimulating space for them, and expose them to informative and interesting books, toys, pictures, and videos. This can awaken their curiosity and make them open to learning new things.
While it is essential to tone down certain things for your child, there is no need for overdoing it. At times, too simple could mean too boring. Hence, include challenges in your little one’s routine and keep them engaged. For instance, introduce them to brain games or intricate puzzles, which stimulate both curiosity and critical thinking in them.
Your child may come up to you with a lot of different questions. While you may think giving in-depth answers can help your child more, in reality, they may hardly be called for. Instead of overwhelming your child with too much information, address their questions clearly, and without any complications. This way, you won’t kill the fun of learning, and also expose your child to different topics.
Instead of asking, “Is that colour blue?” ask. “Which colour is that?” or even better, “How many colours do you see out there?” before you get into the main question. Open-ended questions like these aid thinking in your child and also spark curiosity.
Give your little one a mental ride when they least expect it. Arrange an impromptu picnic at lunch, set out for a walk to a new neighbourhood, or visit a cool new cafe. By taking them by surprise, you stimulate your little one’s mind in a fun and positive way and encourage curiosity.
Curiosity in kids helps encourage them to explore new areas of knowledge. It also helps them familiarise themselves with the unfamiliar, and ultilise their brains to the maximum capacity. As a result, your curious child becomes more confident, retains information more, and uses critical thinking to solve problems.
So while we understand that answering your child’s queries may get tiring at times, encourage them to keep asking about all that they can think of to feed their brain with the best knowledge and enhance their curiosity.
