While you are busy buying ornaments for your Christmas Tree why not make a Christmas Tree at home using cookies? Here’s a very easy yet creative DIY Christmas Tree made from sugar cookies!
You first need to make a batch of different sized Star shaped sugar cookies and then assemble them to create your awesome Christmas Tree made of cookies.
Ingredients for the Sugar Cookie Dough:
¾ cup salted butter
1 cup powdered sugar
2 eggs
2.5 cups refined wheat flour / maida
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4th teaspoon salt (if using unsalted butter, use ½ teaspoon salt)
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
How to make the sugar cookies?
Step 1: Cream butter and sugar in a vessel using an electric beater till the mixture turns white and feels fluffy.
Step 2: Add in the eggs, one by one. Beat lightly just to mix the eggs well.
Step 3: Then mix in the remaining ingredients and fold lightly using a spatula. The mixture is going to be extremely soft, almost between a batter and dough.
Step 4: Handle carefully and remove the dough on a cling film, wrap and refrigerate it for minimum 3 hours.
Step 5: When ready to shape and bake the cookies, remove the dough from the refrigerator. Keep flour, cookie cutter, rolling pin, greased baking tray ready.
Step 6: Dust the surface with enough flour and then roll the dough to a thickness of 1/8th of an inch. Cut with the cutters and place on the tray. Use 3 different sizes of Star cookie cutters and make at least 5 cookies of each size. In total you need 15 cookies.
Step 7: Bake the cookies in a pre-heated oven for 5 to 8 minutes at 200C. When the edges start to achieve a light brown tinge remove them from the oven. Let the tray sit on the kitchen counter till all the cookies have cooled.
Cookie Icing
1 cups icing sugar or powdered sugar
1 tablespoons milk
Few drops of Green food color
Step1: Place sugar in a dry bowl, add milk drop by drop and mix using a fork. Milk is used to achieve the right consistency so don’t add all in one go. Once the icing is ready let it sit for 10minutes before mixing in the color.
Step 2: Using a toothpick or a paint brush, add green color drop by drop to the icing. After each drop, mix to check for the desired shade. Cover the icing with a cling wrap till further use.
How to assemble the Cookie Christmas Tree?
Step 1: Bottom to top, largest to smallest arrange star cookies and stick them using cookie icing.
Step 2: Dust icing sugar on the tree and tap all the excess sugar out. This is done to get the snowy effect.
Step 3: Put the green color icing in a piping bag and pipe out on the tree edges.
Step 4: Finally, place a decorated star on top to finish the Christmas tree.
Your child is sure to have a lot of fun while you make this and it will be an absolute delight for them to eat off this Christmas tree!
Merry Christmas!
