Gingivitis is a gum disease characterized by inflammation and swollen red gums. It is a result of bacterial accumulation in the mouth that leads to the formation of a sticky layer called plaque on and around the teeth and the gum line. This plaque formed around the teeth and gums is not treated well then it continues to harden into tartar.
This is a mild form of gum disease found in children of all ages that could be reversed if treated well. In case, if gingivitis isn’t taken care of at the right time it will gradually lead to mild periodontitis followed by advanced periodontitis. This can lead to the loss of tissues and bones around the teeth.
The symptoms vary as per the stage of the disease:
Three of the best ways to prevent Gingivitis are:
Use good brushing and flossing techniques along with total mouth hygiene. Use baby-safe toothpaste that is low in fluoride content for kids between the age of 18 months to 6 years. Choose white toothpaste over the flavoured and coloured ones. Regular white toothpaste could be used after the age of 6 years. Choose the correct size and type of toothbrush for your kids and keep a habit to brush at least twice a day.
Avoid consuming food that is high in sugar and starch. Have a balanced nutritious diet that supports good oral health.
Schedule periodic dental check-ups with your dentist to keep a check on your kid’s oral health. Go for regular dental clean-ups to maintain good oral health and prevent such gum diseases.
