Newborns are prone to have skin rashes. Several factors might lead to rashes in newborns. Skin rashes could be a result of constant friction, allergies, heat exposures, dampness, etc.

Few rashes can be treated with simple home remedies, where a few require medications. In case of oozing rashes, fever, or any other serious reactions along with rashes, contact your doctor immediately.

Mild rashes can be treated, or rashes could be prevented from worsening at home by following a few easy routine tips:

  • Use a cold compress on rashes to reduce inflammation or swelling. Use a soft cloth that’s soaked in cold water to tap it gently on the rashes. A cold compress is best used to soothe rashes caused by heat exposure. Using ice packs directly on the baby’s skin can lead to frostbites.
  • Bathe your baby with lukewarm water twice a day and pat dry the skin gently using a soft towel. Avoid rubbing the skin.
  • Moisturize the baby’s skin with baby-safe moisturizers immediately after bathing. Do not apply moisturizer on even slightly damp skin.
  • Use mild detergent to wash your baby’s clothes. Using harsh detergents can irritate the baby’s skin and lead to rashes.
  • Use the correct size diapers for your baby. Using very tight diapers can lead to diaper rashes due to the constant friction caused.
  • Do not leave your baby in a damp or dirty diaper for long. Keep changing the diapers frequently.
  • Use loose breathable clothing for your baby. Do not make them wear too many layers of clothes or too tight clothes.
  • Applying a few drops of breastmilk on baby rashes can help soothe them. The immunoglobulins and healing properties of breastmilk can help to treat infections.
Applying olive oil or coconut oil on the rashes can help heal and soothe them. It also helps nourish and renew the baby’s skin. Using virgin coconut oil is preferable as it has anti-inflammatory properties to reduce the swelling caused by the rashes.
