Born and raised in a Gujarati family in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Falguni Nayar already had a high-profile job as a Managing Director at Kotak Mahindra Capital Company. A graduate from the Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics and a postgraduate from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, she was an established name in the financial industry.

But in 2021, at the age of 50, she decided to quit her cushy job and pursue her passion; the internet and beauty. When she started Nykaa she had zero experience either in beauty and fashion or retail and technology. Yet she took the leap of faith, and successfully so!

In an interview with India Today, Nayar explained how she managed to strike the right balance between being a mother and a successful businesswoman.

“I feel women put constraints in their minds which are not so necessary. Today, many women are managing their businesses cum young children. I don’t think there is one playbook. I did it when I did it, and I am glad that I at least tried it when I tried it,” she said.

Today she is recognized globally as India’s only self-made woman billionaire. Her company Nykaa was listed at $13 billion on 10 November, 2021.

Nykaa in Sanskrit means ‘one in the spotlight’ and Nayar is one woman entrepreneur who deserves to be in the spotlight!
