Government Maternity Scheme: Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan

The Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) India foscusses on maternal mortality, and is working to eradicate negligent health care and low awareness among young mothers.

The PMSMA was therefore, devised to ensure that these issues are effectively addressed.

It is a fixed day strategy, every month across the country during which a range of quality maternal health services is envisaged to be provided as part of Antenatal Care. The campaign was launched to provide all pregnant women access to quality antenatal services to detect and prevent life-threatening complications during childbirth.

Under the campaign, a minimum package of antenatal care services is to be provided to the beneficiaries on the 9th day of every month at the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Clinics to ensure that every pregnant woman receives at least one check-up in her 2nd/ 3rd trimester of pregnancy. If the 9th day of the month is a Sunday / a holiday, then the clinic needs to be organised on the next working day.

Eligibility: All pregnant women who are in their second and third trimesters of pregnancy.

How to apply: Register under PMSMA by visiting the regional public health care facility.

Benefits:

• Detailed medical history of the beneficiary will be collected and assessed for signs of any diseases which could complicate pregnancy
• Collection of medical samples for laboratory tests and diagnosis. If specialised testing needs to be conducted the transportation of sample is also the AWC’s responsibility
• Prescribed ultrasound for each trimester
• Consultation with specialist doctors in case of high-risk patients
• Counseling sessions for mother on health-care, child-care, and post-partum family planning
• Guidance on nutrition, supplements to be taken during pregnancy, immunization of child and nursing
• Provision of government approved safe abortion facilities in case of unwanted pregnancies
