Height measurements can be tricky.

Plenty of health calculators use height, weight or waist measurements to give an indication of how healthy you are. While weight, waist, etc. can be easy to check, measuring height can be slightly more challenging. Here is how you can measure height for your child accurately.

How to measure height using a measuring tape

1. Gather these items – a pencil, a measuring tape or ruler, and a small box or hard cover book.
2. Find the right spot in your house where you can make your child stand on a flat floor surface against a wall. Avoid standing on rugs or carpets, you need a hard floor like concrete, wood or tile.
3. Take off any shoes, socks, or slippers, and ask your child to stand barefoot against the wall.
4. Take off any headgear like a headband, hat or a ponytail that you daughter might be wearing. The hair should be flat.
5. Make the child stand with the feet together, against the wall as straight as possible, with the head, back, shoulders and heels touching the wall completely. Ask the child to tuck in the chin and look absolutely straight ahead.
6. Place the box or book on the head and against the wall without tilting, as parallel to the floor.
7. Using the pencil, make a mark below the box or book where it meets the wall.
8. Using the inch tape, measure the distance between the pencil mark and the floor. This is the height of your child. You can either measure directly in centimetres, or in inches and feet.

Converting inches to centimetres

If you have measured in inches, here is how you can convert to centimetres.

1 inch = 2.5 cms.

1 foot = 12 inches.

So 1 foot = 12 * 2.5 = 30 cms.

Thus,

2 feet= 60 cms

3 feet = 90 cms

4 feet = 120 cms

In this manner, you can easily calculate the height and use it to plot on height and weight charts.
