Palak ka chilla is essentially an Indian style pancake made using gram flour or besan and flavoured with fresh spinach leaves. Spinach is packed with Iron and Vitamin A so it is the ideal food to start your day with.

Kids usually don’t like spinach so this is a good way of getting it into their system without them knowing! Same can be done with other vegetables they dislike. I have used chopped spinach but you could grind the same and add to the batter to make green coloured pancakes if that is what your kids would enjoy eating. The recipe is quick and requires no prior preparation or fancy ingredients.

Palak ka Chilla

Ingredients

1 cup besan / gram flour

½ teaspoon red chilli powder (omit if child cannot handle)

½ teaspoon turmeric / haldi powder

1 teaspoon salt

¾th cup water

1 cup chopped spinach leaves / palak

1/4th cup chopped onion

Oil for cooking

Method

Step 1 – Mix together besan, red chilli powder, turmeric, and salt in a dry bowl. Add in water and make a smooth batter using a whisk. The batter is almost similar to pakoda batter, add more water if required.

Step 2 – Mix spinach leaves and onion into the batter. Keep the batter aside for 15 minutes before cooking.

Step 3 – Heat a griddle and brush with little oil. Pour ladle full of the prepared chilla batter on the hot griddle. You can choose to make whatever size chillas you want.

Step 4 – Apply oil and cook on both sides till you see small holes and the chillas start browning. Serve the chillas hot with a dip or ketchup.

Hope your kids enjoy this breakfast recipe!
