Tend to Your Kid’s Teething Troubles With These Biscuits

When the babies start teething, they need something that will suppress their urge to bite and chew. And while teethers come in handy when the babies are young, things change once they are old enough to eat and swallow! This is when you need to replace the non-edible teethers with edible stuff.

I have personally given my child edible teethers and  have observed how well he has enjoyed grabbing food and eating independently. From 9 month onwards, I have offered rotis, vegetable sticks, breadsticks and homemade teething biscuits to him. Of all the available options, homemade baby teether recipes are any day advisable for babies as they ensure nutrition and flavour.

Overtime I have baked many batches of these teething biscuits and each time I have experimented with different flavours, while also keeping the core ingredients same. These biscuits are light and flaky making it easy for the baby to bite into and swallow. This recipe calls for basic ingredients and is ready in under an  hour, so no prior planning is required to make them and it’s a good activity to indulge in while the baby is asleep!

I have shared the cheese flavoured recipe for these biscuits but if you feel it’s too early to introduce your baby to cheese then go ahead and omit it. Similarly, spices can be added depending upon the baby’s acceptability towards it. Although, I highly recommend flavouring the biscuits to entice the baby’s palate. You can try using combination flour and or equal amounts of wheat with rice or ragi.

Also the cooking oil flavour can be changed regularly. Ghee can replace oil, occasionally. The idea is to introduce more and more variation once the earlier flavour has been accepted well and the baby starts getting bored of it. This is the only way their palates can be explored and exploited. Also try and experiment with shapes of the biscuits to create curiosity.

The biscuits stay good for 4 to 5 days in an airtight container at  room temperature. In the fridge they can be stored for 15 to 20 days but I would always advise against it. Try and give your child freshly prepared food as much as you can.

Teething Biscuits for Babies

Ingredients

  • ½ cup whole wheat flour
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil
  • 1 tablespoon curd
  • Salt, as per taste
  • 1 tablespoon grated cheese
  • 1/4th teaspoon spice powder (cumin, ajwain or cinnamon), optional
  • Hot water, as required

Method

Step 1: In a bowl, sift the wheat flour. Add oil, curd and salt. If using any spice powder add that too. Give the ingredients a light mix.

Step 2: Using hot water (approx 1 to 2 tablespoons), bind everything together to form pliable dough. Knead well, for a minute or two.

Step 3: Next, mix in the grated cheese. Do not knead after adding the cheese. Cover the dough and let it rest for 15 minutes.

Step 4: Switch on the oven and set the temperature to 200 C. Let it preheat till you roll and shape the biscuits

Step 5: Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough on a floured surface. Cut into desired shapes or you could even make sticks depending upon what the baby is comfortable in holding.

Step 6: Place the biscuits on a greased baking tray and push the tray in the oven.

Step 7: Reduce the oven temperature to 180 C and bake the biscuits till golden brown, this should take approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Sticks will take a little longer to bake and will need to be turned halfway through baking.

Step 8: Once this baby teething cookie recipe is ready, remove and cool them completely. Store in an airtight container, this will keep the cookies good for about 4 days at room temperature.
