While most moms surely want to have vaginal birth since it means postpartum recovery is quicker, that is not always the case. In this day and age since we are not as active as our ancestors, we tend to tear or may need an episiotomy at the time of delivery. The perineum which is the area between your vagina and the anus is not elastic enough and there may be tears if the doctor decides to perform an episiotomy, which is an incision made to widen the area.

What is important is the postpartum care of this area.

  • It takes about 7 to 10 days to heal in most cases. Here are some tips on how to hasten this process and ensure that you are comfortable. Here is how…
  • Ensure that you wear cotton underpants and cotton maternity pads to help the area breathe.
  • Do not cross your legs or stretch them especially while sitting, as this can cause more harm than good.
  • Avoid brisk walking and excessive stair climbing.
  • Wash the stitches with warm water every time you use the bathroom to urinate or pass motions. Once washed well, pat dry and apply the anti-infective ointment as prescribed by the doctor.
  • You may find it uncomfortable to sit for a few days. You can sit on a special pillow designed for an episiotomy which is like a ring with a hollow in the centre.
  • Soak your bottom in warm water for a few minutes as this can help to dry and  heal the stitches.
  • Exposing your bottom to air for a few minutes every day can also aid in the quick healing process.
  • If the stitches are extremely uncomfortable in the first few days you can take a painkiller to get some relief. Do take your doctor’s prescription for the same.
