Every twin mom goes through that particular day when her two become TOO much to handle!
On such unfortunate days your spine weakens and your eyes weep, and you feel utterly frustrated! Twins pick up moods and behavior from one another and while ‘when-one- giggles-and-the-other-one-giggles-too’ seems out of this world, it’s exact opposite seems like a situation guaranteed to raise hell. Often, in such circumstances, no one really understands how utterly depressing it can get just to calm down a pair of cranky twins – no one, except a fellow mother of twins!
Though it’s one hard nut of a situation to crack, we have some remedies that can offer some respite.
I know it’s easier said than done, but the first thing you should do is try to reach a certain sense of sanity and peace within yourself. Scream in an empty room, howl and cry if you have to, talk to someone who understands or even pour a bucket full of ice cubes over yourself. Vent it out and let all that pressure go. It’s no good turning into a locked boiler.
It’s OK to feel angry
Convince yourself that it is ABSOLUTELY OK to feel angry and frustrated with your sweet little chunks of cake. There are days where that tank of patience has totally emptied and it’s REALLY OK to feel overwhelmed with depression. As long as you are ready to fight it and come out victorious, it should all work out for you in a matter of minutes!
Take some time off
I know when twins are howling for no rhyme or reason; things can get really out of control, but you must not lose your sense of perception.Try to keep yourself away from them for some time. Go to some other room, even the washroom if that helps. Take a few minutes to calm down enough to be able to hear your thoughts and think the situation through with clarity, knowing that you have to jump back into the frying pan within a matter of minutes. Make sure that your kids are placed within a childproof environment, if no one else is there to supervise them.
Well I know this should have been the first point, but it’s really the second!! You can try to calm down your kids only when you have regained your own composure. Kids can calm down real quick, if you play your tricks well.
Use the ‘favorite items’ ploy
When your kids get really cranky, try offering them something that they are really crazy about. It could be some chocolate, or their favorite food item, or some screen time. Try out this approach to distract them and divert their minds to something more positive. Stuffing them in a stroller and taking them out for a walk, even a stride up to your balcony also works like a charm!
Try to make them listen to you
The only way to make them listen to you is by narrating a story that will attract their attention immediately. If you read books, keep their favourite books handy and start reading them. Even if they don’t seem too keen at first, they will join you soon after.
When nothing else works! A tub of water is your last resort
When nothing else works, give them a tub of water to splash and drench themselves in. Use this sure shot method to divert their energy into play from anger and stubbornness, thus saving the last ounce of sanity still left inside you, dear mommies!
Of all the tips and tricks, each mom has a set of her own! I’m sure you have more to tell… do share them with us and enlighten the entire Twin Mom Community! Till then, More Sanity and Patience to you!
