It’s awful. The mercury has hit 39 degrees and the heat is relentless. In a quest to keep the kids busy, I have, brought out their most loved indoor toys. Some of the favourites in my home are:
1. AnGel Kids Gift Birthday Party Play Food Set
It is the perfect pretend play toy for my toddler. Huge conversations take place in pretence of a birthday celebration thus developing social skills. Placing the decorations on helps her practice her fine motor skills and requires a fair amount of concentration. What is lovely is that she can actually cut the cake (yes the pieces are attached to each other with Velcro!) Assembling the cake helps develop problem-solving skills. Ideal for 18 months +.

2. Laurus Toys Builder 50 – Medium Construction with Slabs & Cubes
These are good old wooden blocks. It is nothing elaborate. But the opportunities to create and explore with this open-ended toy is countless. It fosters learning of shapes, the ability to balance and consequently construct, imagination and creativity. These toys impart learning experience for boys and girls of all ages beyond 4 years. Since they are non-hazardous and sturdy, I allow my toddler to try her hand at these.

3. Fun Kinetic Sand
This is a great substitute to outdoor sand-pits. Playing with this is almost therapeutic. It is super mouldable, flexible, soft and non-messy. It is great for indoor spaces and small apartments in urban cities and comes at a price much less than its worth. Great for sensory play and creative stimulus. We play with it over and over and over again!
Prices begin at Rs. 250 and vary in accordance to brand and weight.
Almost all local toy shops have it now. Alternately there are several options online.

4. Leapfrog Fridge Phonics
This is a simple toy which teaches the Jolly Phonics Method to the kids. There are all 26 letters in this which generate the phonic sound when placed inside the Scouts House. This is also a great way for kids to learn alphabet recognition and the alphabets can be combined into words on any magnetic surface. I remember making two and three letter words for my son on the refrigerator. With my toddler, I have just started with the vowels and kept the other alphabets away for now. Highly recommended for 2 years and above.

5. Let’s go fishing!
Classily designed, it is a compact and fun game for kids. While the fish opens the mouth, you fish them out with the fishing pole. Such fun! Though the box says 4 years and above, younger kids enjoy it too. My younger one catches the fish with the opposite end of the pole, but hey it works for her! It’s great for hand-eye coordination, counting and colours. We make a little game out of not just catching the fish, but catching three green in a row, etc. so it has also helped us work on our math too.

These are some of the toys that helped me a great deal to engage my kids indoors as well as help to learn. You can try it out too unless your toddlers already love their indoor play already 🙂
Have fun in the coming summer holidays!
