Baking With Kids!

Why not celebrate Christmas and New Year by baking a cake with your child? Working in the kitchen teaches a lot of things to the child, boys and girls alike. It’s a great practical life activity. Children learn self care and hygiene (washing hands before starting), numbers, quantities, fractions (mix 1 cup this & ½ cup that), independence, sequencing (do this and then do that and then bake) and much more.

It improves their motor skills as they work out their tiny muscles while performing age relevant kitchen chores. Practical life activities make for one of the most important areas of Montessori education, helping with order, concentration, coordination, and independence.

Here is the recipe for a healthy cake for kids that they would love preparing and eating too.

AGE GROUP – 18 months onwards

TIME REQUIRED FOR ACTIVITY PREPARATION – 20 Minutes

HOW AND WHAT TO DO

  • Grab a recipe for cake. You can check this healthy, guilt free recipe of cake HERE
  • Gather your materials and involve your child in whatever capacity you can. For example in the pictures here, my son is helping me in adding the ingredients in the bowl, mixing it, whisking it, pouring the batter into the bowl and finally cutting the cake. He is 22 months in these pictures.
  • Talk to your kid as per their understanding and age about the process. Be elaborate in describing the recipe and process. You never know what all they are absorbing while they do this task and might surprise you one day with their learning!
  • Enjoy this guilt free cake on the first day of the year with your entire family
