Fun Ways to Learn the Alphabet: Say “hooray” with letter H!

This week in our ‘Letter of the week series’, I present to you some hands-on, creative ways of practising letter H with your preschooler. As always, feel free to tweak and customize your activities based on two important aspects:

  • 1. Your child’s interest
  • 2. Your child’s understanding level

So let’s dive in!

Here is an overview of our letter H shelf:

Now let’s take a closer look at the activities!

The first tray is our tracing work with Sandpaper letters. Also we tried our hand at forming uppercase letter H with Popsicle sticks! Such a fun pre-writing work:-)

We also went through our letter H poster which you can put up on a wall with scotch tape (that does not leave any stains / marks behind).

We also like to practice our phonics with the help of the “Letter of the week” folder which includes picture cards of objects starting from that particular letter sound. (“Huh” in this case)

I also put together a simple letter H tray containing a miniature horse, hippo, hulk, hexagon and a helicopter! This is a great (hands-on) way to practice and master initial letter sounds. Plus it is something that is so easy to set up!

Next, H is for “HAPPINESS” – one of the most important human emotion! I created a “Booklet of Happiness” consisting of happy, cheerful photos of children around the world. Needless to say, this was something that my son truly enjoyed on a repeat mode! You can get this printable for free on my blog. Do let me know how your child enjoys this one, as I have received a lot of rave reviews from mothers on this one particularly:-)

H is for hammering, something that children love to do (of course using a dummy hammer!). So I set up a fun free play activity with a hammer! I also added some clay to this work, as my son loves to knead, pound and hammer the clay.

Next some craftsy work – H is for house! I pre-cut some shapes, and we created a house out of it. We decorated it with some stickers, too. I also kept some blocks that my son used for building tiny houses.

H is also for the cute Hedgehog! And I could not resist including some fun hedgehog-themed activities.

First we did a fun fork painting of hedgehog:

Next, we created a hedgehog using a blob of clay and toothpicks. This also doubled up as a great fine motor work;-)

I also created these cute hedgehog themed cutting strips! Again a big favorite of my son:-)

And while we were at it, we did a quick uppercase / lowercase sort!

One more craftsy work – H is for hats – So we decorated few with supplies we had at home (read: pom poms, stickers and markers). My son was more interested in wearing the hat, versus decorating it 😉

P.S: You can download these hat templates for free from my blog.

And lastly, for my transport-obsessed son, I included couple of helicopter-themed activities. First a quick matching game of different helicopters:

And a fun math work, where my son had to match the helicopter to their respective helipads!

So that pretty much concludes our letter H works. Let me know which on the above are you excited to try at home for your child?:-)
